![]() Original article written by Tom Johnston USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has expanded its livestock reporting to include hogs raised in compliance with animal confinement legislation (ACL), which includes California’s Prop 12. The new classification has been added to the National Weekly Direct Swine Non-Carcass Merit Premium report. Previously, ACL pigs were listed under USDA reporting laws as “other,” which included programs paying premiums for various protocols and characteristics like antibiotic-free. But the volume of ACL pigs has grown to merit its own listing, AMS explained. “This addition will provide pork industry stakeholders with the information necessary to make informed production and marketing decisions relating to ACL-compliant hogs,” AMS said in a news release. Prop 12 sets conditions on the sale of pork meat in California, regardless of where it was produced, that include the requirement that all products must be from pigs born to a sow housed in at least 24 square feet of space. The measure goes into full enforcement on Jan. 1, 2024. Original article written by Tom Johnston on Meatingplace.com Prop 12USDAhogsComments are closed.
